<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">TONIGHT our Friday Night Flight @ NE ALBERTA</span> will feature some really lovely reds made from perhaps our favorite Spanish varietal, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mencia</span>.  This grape mostly grows in the Northwest regions of Bierzo and Ribeira Sacra.  Eric Asimov of the New York Times wrote <a href="http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102715125714&amp;s=3118&amp;e=001KcfRvjsTIYsyLA5wKbKr2oI8i4L12zrc0gCo7fhPBED9tL5kk0HtIzTRgpB22RvTCwUyHfKjrgdgFBTmxspiPm2bV1kNY9AzUIL6wzoH4rwDQxi9793zbwh0CdCVdHTGTMQUUurzbjfmSV4Q8o7GGRhxPtYZzVPss_TtW7b1j4IAcKP24vnu4WMJJ2TwNyuKXwfJ7_QJFTlv9DyvgbWXyPvkfQWooylcsOKyAXWwdW0=" target="_blank">this article</a> about the Ribeira Sacra region a few weeks back and I have been hunting for new wines from the area since.  We&#8217;re excited to show off 3 wines that are brand new to Portland and a couple others that have made a return appearance after a short hiatus.  Come check out these soft and elegant wines that many refer to as the Pinot Noir of Spain in reference to their Burgundian quality to really showcase the terroir from where they are grown.  <span style="font-weight: bold; color: #660000;">Tasting starts at 5pm and runs until the bottles are dry.  $10 tasting fee.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">FOOD &amp; WINE MAGAZINE</span> has just announced their <a href="http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102715125714&amp;s=3118&amp;e=001KcfRvjsTIYtCIo_joCXIbSJ9SYoT0wsd_ZLzAC3Ynujg4JqYRQ9pUb0ifAN_JA3dxfHD6STjQvkDF_kwsCq7e53PeSMyJCf4dUdLKzwF_T-n7JthGBg6YwseOi_3rbe-eQK7o1KWysNUVbDg45EEwX1iwD9B9hcj9RzxIsGgLcY=" target="_blank">2009 American Wine Awards</a>.  I enjoyed being a judge for this competition for the second year in a row, and I am excited to see names like Tablas Creek, Copain and Arnot Roberts among the wines featured.  Kudos to Sineann, but let&#8217;s hope more Oregon wineries make the list next year!  At least the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Winemaker of the Year</span> is from the Northwest &#8211; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Charles Smith of K Vintners</span> gets that honor.  To celebrate with him, we&#8217;ll be doing a fun <span style="color: #ff0000;">KVintners tasting next week</span>, including wines ranging from the <span style="color: #000000;">Kung Fu Girl Riesling  and Velvet Devil Merlot <span style="color: #663300;">on up to the tiny production</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Guido</span></span> and <span style="font-weight: bold; color: #000000;">The Boy</span>, plus a few <span style="font-weight: bold; color: #000000;">single-vineyard Syrah</span>.  Put <span style="color: #ff0000;">next Friday, September 25th</span> on your calendar and join us at the <span style="font-weight: bold;">NW Lovejoy</span> location starting at 5pm.</p>

On Wednesday, September 30th, we are partnering up with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ristorante Fratelli</span> for another visiting <span style="font-weight: bold;">Italian winemaker&#8217;s dinner</span>, this time featuring the wines of <span style="font-weight: bold;">MASI</span>.  This should be a wonderful evening and <span style="color: #ff0000;">details follow below</span>.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Don&#8217;t forget Saturday</span> is the ALBERTA STREET FAIR, so if you are coming down to pickup your wine orders, try approaching the shop from Killingsworth and park on NE 29th.  Otherwise, come down with friends and family and stroll along the street one last time while the weather is still warm.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here is a simple event we’re doing at Fratelli and Bar Due’.  Every Tuesday we are highlighting produce that has come into season in my home garden by creating a special menu to feature the weekly bounty.  I&#8217;ll be harvesting choice items in the morning and giving them to our Sous Chef Adrian Hutapea, who will create an impromptu menu for you to enjoy each Tuesday night.  These inspired menus will continue through September or until the garden is exhausted, for a truly Italian approach with a Portland twist!</p>

Just when you think they can&#8217;t get any better, Owen Roe surprises us.  This past Spring, they released a new line of wines under the <span style="color: #666600; font-weight: bold;">CORVIDAE</span> label at even better values than their Sharecropper&#8217;s series.  Made mostly from grapes grown in Washington, and processed at their Washington facility, Owen Roe has hit another home run.  Not only are the labels adorable, but the wines are delicious.  And they range in price from about $9 to $14.  So what are you waiting for?  Come taste them all this Friday.  And as an added bonus, we&#8217;ll have the 2008 Abbot&#8217;s Table open to taste as well.</p>

<p>This past April, I had a chance to make a quick visit to some vineyards in Puglia and hang out in the wonderful baroque town of Lecce.  Along with me on the trip was Shannon, the sommelier from Fratelli Ristorante, and the two of us made a pact to do some events together when we returned.  Well, the perfect opportunity has just arrived and knowing the fine cuisine that Paul always puts out from the kitchen, this should be a delicious evening.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Steps from the Adriatic sea, ancient towers guard the red clay and limestone of the Masseria Maime at the heart of the Salento peninsula.  A hundred miles to the north, the Bocca di Lupo calls back, low and long and full throated.  Twenty-six generations of the Antinori family have passed on the legacy that Marchese Piero Antinori brings to the riches and history of Puglia.  Join us at Ristorante Fratelli on Tuesday July 28<sup>th</sup> for a call of the wild with the passionate wines of Tormaresca paired with Puglian inspired dishes.  Chairs at six with repast at six-thirty.  Please call the restaurant for reservations.</p>
<p>The evening’s pairings will include the following…</p>
<p>2007 Chardonnay paired with pan seared Albacore tuna, with mixed greens, capers and an herb vinaigrette</p>
<p>2003 Torcicoda Primitivo accompanied by a puree of fava beans with chicory and Pecorino Margherita</p>
<p>2007 Neprica served with house made gnocchetti, with braised rabbit and roasted summer squash</p>
<p>2003 Masseria Maime Negroamaro to be enjoyed with a traditional eggplant caponata</p>
<p>2003 Bocca di Lupo Aglianico standing with wood fire oven roasted lamb, extra virgin olive oil poached potatoes, and a Bocca di Lupo glace’, finished with truffle salt and Pianogrillio extra virgin olive oil</p>
<p>Darryl from Cork wine shop is teaming up with us for this event, and will be on hand the evening of the event to take special orders on the featured wines.</p>
