Three recent arrivals from the Rhone have us salivating and we wanted to share them with you in today’s Wine Finds email. One comes from a producer many in Portland know as a great value for Village-level Rhone reds. The other two wines are from the importer Peter Weygandt, who is known for his collection of top-quality boutique French wineries.

2011 DOMAINE ALARY Le Grange Daniel VdP Blanc(Reg $15.75)
cork club $13.50/btl, $156/cs . nonclub $14.50/btl, $170.10/cs
The white wines of the Rhone make a perfect transition from Summer to Fall, as they tend to be richer and more full of flavor, thus able to stand up to heartier fare on the dinner table. Domaine Alary is a family affair located in the village of Cairanne, where 10 generations dating back to 1692 have had a hand at winemaking for this estate. Their white wine is made from 100% Roussanne, a grape native to the region. Here you get the rich and full style of Roussanne, complete with tropical flavors like pineapple and coconut milk with a nice dose of cinnamon and nutmeg showing up as well. From red curry to roast game birds, this is the kind of white wine that will energize your senses and please a wide group of drinkers, from big Chardonnay lovers to the Viognier and Chateauneuf Blanc fans. And it delivers those big flavors at a great value. Order some today and save extra. Limit 1 case per customer.
2010 DOMAINE ALARY Le Gerbaude CdR Rouge (Reg. $17)cork club $14.50/btl, $168/cs . nonclub $15.75/btl, $183.60/cs
Illustrating the quality of their wines, we tasted both the red and the white from Domaine Alary and were equally impressed by both. This red bottling blends the usual Grenache and Syrah with a hearty splash of Carignan, giving it a little more of a Cassis note to the red fruit profile, but finishing up with pepper. Lots of pepper. White pepper, black pepper, pink peppercorns. Hard to tell which it is, but for sure, pepper is there. If you enjoy these hearty Rhone reds that finish with a cracked pepper note, grab some of the Alary Le Gerbaude while the very small supplies last! Limit 1 case per customer.
2010 BURLE Gigondas Les Pailleroudas (Reg $22.50)cork club $19/btl, $216/cs . nonclub $21/btl, $243/cs
Following up the terrific Cotes du Rhone from Burle we received a few months back is the village bottling of Gigondas from the estate’s home town. For those already familiar with the many villages of the Rhone, you know the importance of Gigondas for producing bold, powerful reds which at their best rival Chateauneuf du Pape but always offer a better value than their more famous neighbors. When it comes to the wines of Burle, the prices are unbeatable, thanks to the efforts of Portland-based importer Phil Smith, who has been bringing these wines to our market for decades. 2010 is proving to be a delicious vintage to drink but with enough body and structure to age as well. I feel this is a 5 year wine, one that you can enjoy anytime during that period and be amply rewarded. I’m not saying it can’t last 10 or more years, just that all the intensity of Grenache fruit will start to fade at some point and it would be a shame not to enjoy the deep, dark flavors and earthy animal complexity that is front and center right now. Grab a case and see how it evolves for your own palate. It’s definitely a value-priced investment for your cellar or your dinner table given the quality in the bottle. Limit 1 case per customer.
