Bette McKibben, co-owner of McK Ranch, has been selected as a delegate for Slow Food International at the Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre world meeting in Italy this fall. Slow Food International chose only 200 delegates from the United States, and just 5 from the Northwest region.
This year, Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre will be held together as a unified event for the first time, showcasing the diversity of food from all continents. The event will explore many of the important issues connected with food production and consumption, including environmental protection, promotion of nutritious foods, and the role of young people in the future of agriculture. Bette McKibben will bring several years of experience in direct-to-consumer marketing and grass-fed beef production to the conversation.
Bette and her husband, David McKibben, have owned and operated McK Ranch since 1989, starting as a cow/calf operation. In 2000, they transitioned the business into a direct market, 100% grass-fed cattle ranch. They have seen their business grow considerably in the last few years, as demand for wholesome meat has climbed. They now raise broiler chickens and laying hens in addition to their signature beef. Bette and David have developed a loyal customer base throughout the Willamette Valley.
On August 29th, Dinner at the Rafns’ will host a fundraiser for Bette’s trip. A portion of her travel expenses are paid by Slow Food, but if David is to join her, they need to cover the rest. Dinner at the Rafns’ is planning an Italian-themed, five-course meal with wine pairings from Illahe Vineyards. Bette and David will attend the dinner to discuss their important trip.
