Enter Public Domain: Exceptional Coffee, Public Cuppings and Events

Newest addition to Portland’s coffee conversation opens April 30th

PORTLAND, ORApril 27, 2010 – Built on the belief that coffee should be an experience, not just a routine, Public Domain, Portland’s newest coffeehouse, offers a new opportunity to explore and enjoy exceptional coffee.  Opening Friday, April 30, Public Domain brings a new line up of seasonal coffees, talented baristas, and the innovative new espresso machine, the Slayer, to its city center location at 603 SW Broadway.

“Public Domain is about sharing great coffee by creating a shop focused on engaging with it—from the story about how it was grown and roasted to how the drinks are prepared,” said Roastmaster Paul Thornton, a 28-year veteran of the specialty coffee industry.“We’re going to be cupping daily with customers and creating conversations around how to appreciate great coffees.”

Customers are invited to join Public Domain’s roasters and baristas for these open cuppings that will take place each day at 1 p.m. The cuppings will introduce techniques used during professional coffee tastings and encourage customers to sniff, slurp and share their thoughts on the Public Domain coffees in a fun and approachable environment.

Other regular and special events will be held at the shop to enhance the customer’s coffee experience. During Happy Hour Espresso Tastings each Thursday from 4-6 p.m., customers can taste the latest espresso offerings for $1 each.  Novice and everyday aficionados both can improve their coffee making skills during Home Brewing Classes on the first Saturday of each month at 11 a.m., beginning June 8.

The store will open with a focused menu of three single origins, and one espresso blend – Prometheus. Prometheus was developed by the Public Domain baristas during their eight weeks of roasting and training during the store’s build-out. Customers will choose from these coffee selections—as well as from the rotating “guest grinder”—to be prepared in a variety of methods, including a pour over, and the uncommon “low-pressure brew” from the Slayer.

Public Domain is the vision and artistry of Coffee Bean International, a definitive player in the nation’s specialty coffee industry, and the preeminent wholesaler of specialty coffees nationwide. The concept for Public Domain grew from the company’s passion for roasting and sharing handcrafted coffees, and its desire to connect directly with its consumers.  Follow the evolution of Public Domain and hear from the baristas at publicdomaincoffee.com, on Facebook or at Twitter.com/pdcoffee.
