EVERY DAY WINE – The Odyssey
May 13, 2011
About this Friday’s tasting:
In 2004, longtime wine industry friends, Adam Webb and Mike Kuenz, made their first handshake deal to buy grapes from two rows in an old vine Grenache vineyard in Amador county and their odyssey began.
With more then twenty years of experience between them selling wines from all over the world, the two had developed a true passion for the wines of Northern Spain and Southern France’s Rhone valley. Odisea is the culmination of this shared passion and is focused on producing small lots of fine wines from Rhone and Spanish grape varietals grown in California.
Odisea is committed to a non-interventional winemaking style which includes the use of organically grown fruit whenever possible as well as the use of native yeasts for fermentation. They also keep any fining or filtration to a minimum. The goal is to deliver the purest expression of the fruit and the vineyard through the wines. Another part of their philosophy is their idea that more complex and interesting wines can be made through blending. Not only in a traditional way, but sometimes blending varietals not typically seen together. The wines and their labels are exciting and imaginative with each having its own unique personality. While the wines are always produced in exclusively small lots, they are worth seeking out. Adam and Mike invite you to share their dream and join them in their wine Odyssey.

SPANISH WINE 101 CLASS
Small Vineyards is going to Spain! Along with a delicious tapas-style picnic, we’ll be serving a lush wave of micro-production Iberians as part of our Spanish Wine 101 Class at Every Day Wine. For anyone who attended the Italian 101 series (or didn’t), this new chapter takes us to a nation with an international history to rival its neighbor’s, but a style all its own. From farming practices to food pairings, Spain lies perched somewhere in between the earthy old world nations of Italy and France, and the lush abundance of the new world Americas. Come help us to compare and contrast as we identify Spain’s main regions and de-mystify popular wine styles. Crisp Verdejo from Castilla-Leon? The only organic estate in Rioja? Unctuous, slate-infused reds grown in the pure stone terroir of Priorat? Yes, please! Limited to 35 seats, so don’t delay!
$35 fee includes 8 wines and food pairings (plus, you’ll be some of the first Portlanders to taste the new Cava and Albarino imports on U.S. soil!)
Price: Just $35–limited class size.
Must be 21 years of age to enroll.
Please reply to this email or call 503-331-7119 to sign up for this course.

CLUBHOUSE ROCK
The EDW Monthly Wine Club is recruiting. The idea is simple, the logistics are easy, and the wines are affordable and accessible. Two bottles, once a month, with total cost between $25-$35, never to exceed $35. You may specify “Only Reds” if you like; otherwise, there will be occasional bubbles, whites and roses in the mix, especially during summer months and appropriate holidays. One of the two bottles will always be a red.
How it works:
- Reply to this email to join. Credit card information will NOT be collected. We’re using the “promise to pick up” system. Weird, huh?
- Trust your EDW merchant to choose only fun and interesting wines — that are great values — by the 15th of every month.
- I will email the selections to you each month, informing you that the club wines are ready to be picked up.
- Pick up your club wines by the 30th of the month.
I will only select wines for the club that I would be willing to take home myself. I want to keep things affordable, and show you wines that exceed expectation based on the price. Some obscure, some crowd pleasers. Some party wines, some food wines. All reliable. This will be a lot of fun for all of us. Who knows, you may fall in love with a grape or region you’d never considered. All part of the joy of discovering wine… I’m looking forward to introducing you to my real “go to” wines.
As always, I really do appreciate your loyalty and support. I am one lucky local entrepreneur.
- Beth
