Eatin’, Writin’, and Gettin’ on the Road! August 2010

Greetings!

By the time many of you read this, I will have passed a milestone: I will have turned over to my editor the last of the text for the second edition of Breakfast in Bridgetown. Fairly soon after that, I will have hit the road for a few weeks of sleeping outside in the Rocky Mountains.

Meanwhile, let’s get caught up on the goings-on in the Vast Breakfast Empire! Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Sincerely,

Paul Gerald

The Book is Coming! (And you can order it now) There is going to be a second edition — actually, we’re calling it a “Second Serving” — of Breakfast in Bridgetown. It’s shaping up to have about 120 restaurants, plus some other goodies:

All this will be available sometime in October, hopefully early. And yet there’s more! If you act by October 1, you can pre-order a copy of the book for just $12 with free shipping. You can do that right here. Just understand it will be a while before I get back to you about how you want it signed.

My 15 Minutes of TV Fame Many of you will recall from the last Bulletin that I was involved in a PBS documentary about breakfast in America. It’s called “Breakfast Special,” and in fact it is airing again this Thursday, August 19, at 8 p.m. — in HD, no less.

And yet there’s more! You can watch the whole thing online, for free, right here. Just pay no attention to the man in the green shirt. And I’m sorry for the close-up in HD where I was stuffing some smoked salmon scramble into my face. Believe me, it’s worse for me than you.

Catching up on the Blog Over at BreakfastInBridgetown.com, I am always trying to keep my finger on the pulse of the local breakfast scene, and also sharing the occasional chapter from the new “Second Serving.” Here are some recent highlights:

Two places closed: Francis Cafe on NE Alberta Street and the Ladybug Cafe in St. Johns. Francis was in the first edition of the book, so I shared that review in my “Breakfast Memories” feature on the website.

I have also been to some new places for the book, including the Delta Cafe, the Industrial Cafe, and Sarabeth’s. Oh, wait, Sarabeth’s is in Manhattan.

There have also been some fun podcasts lately, including interviews with Liz Crain, the author of a great new book called Food Lover’s Guide to Portland, and chef/owner John Gorham of Tasty n Sons. Here’s the whole list of shows.

BaconFest 2010! Need I say more? It’s a festival of bacon, hosted by PDX.FM, the home of my radio program. Bands, eating contest, bacon toys and food, the whole deal.

That’s this Saturday, August 21, from noon to … God knows when, really. Find out more at PortlandBaconFest.com. I wish I was going to be there. Well, no I don’t, because I will instead be here. Enjoy the bacon!
