Sept 15 & 16 – Portland Roasting to Host Free Cuppings for Trade and General Public

August 31, 2010

Free events on September 15 & 16 teach how to taste, rate and pair coffee

Portland, Ore. – Culinary professionals and consumers alike are invited to experience the aroma and taste of coffees from the world’s finest coffee growing estates at complimentary cupping events held this month at Portland Roasting Coffee Company, located at 340 SE 7th Avenue in Portland.

The Artisan Cupping for culinary professionals and students will be on Wednesday, September 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This session will explore pairings of specialty single-origin coffees with artisan foods: Guatemala and dark chocolate, El Salvador and nuts, Organic Dark Sumatra and local mushrooms, and Ethiopia and berries.

Cupping for the People, open to the general public, will occur the following day, Thursday, September 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will learn how to professionally taste and rate coffee by the trade’s method – cupping. The same single-origin coffees as those explored in the Artisan Cupping will be highlighted, followed by a tour of the roasting plant.

Both cuppings will be led by Nathanael May, Portland Roasting’s barista trainer. May recently joined Portland Roasting armed with five years as a trainer and brand manager in the coffee industry, first for Starbucks in Folsom, Calif., and most recently for Java City in Sacramento, Calif. In between management stints, May served as a barista at Peet’s in Folsom.

Space is limited for both events. To register, contact May at nathanael@portlandroasting.com.
