Letter from the Executive Director
In the coming year, we will see big changes in the way food reaches our plates. These changes will be provoked by Senate Bill 510–a.k.a. the FDA Food Modernization Act–which is intended to safeguard our food supply as the food distribution system grows ever larger. The only trouble is that SB 510 does not discern between a farmer working a ten acre plot in Woodburn, Oregon and multinational farm conglomerates. Click here to find out what PFM Executive Director Ann Forsthoefel wants you to know about Senate Bill 510>>
Susan Bliss Finds Vegetable Bliss
Last year, dedicated PFM shopper Susan Bliss bought ten raffle tickets in support of our annual harvest fundraiser. Imagine her surprise when she walked away with the grand prize–an entire year of weekly shopping trips at the market! Each week, it has been a pleasure seeing Susan at the market, filling her basket with seaonal delights. Read on to find out how Susan has been enjoying her good fortune>>
Zoe’s Favorites Pickles and Preserves
Ever dream of leaving your day job and starting your own small food business? That’s what Michelle Cooper of Zoe’s Favorites did–and she hasn’t looked back since. Here is her story along with one of her most coveted recipes>>
King Market Token Matching Program Reduction
Due to increased popularity and demand, Foodshare Fund Northeast (FFNE), the SNAP token matching program at King Market, has been reduced from $10 to $5 per week, effective August 1. The volunteer-driven, community-funded program–a project of the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods (NECN)–was launched in July 2009 to increase access to fresh, nutritious food for lowincome residents of North and Northeast Portland. If you would like to donate to FFNE, please click here.
Pietopia!
This year’s Pietopia celebration is bigger and better than ever. Stop by the Buckman Market to meet this year’s winners and view their winning silk screen prints on display at the Pietopia tent. Sampling will begin at 5:30pm and includes the winning recipes as well as pies generously donated by PFM vendors Grand Central Bakery and Packer Orchards. Pietopia t-shirts and pie kits will be raffled off at the end of the market (raffle tickets will be handed out to shoppers from the Pietopia canopy beginning at 3:00pm and collected at the time of the pie tasting). Our Taste the Place booth also runs from 3:00-7:00pm and will feature raspberry rosewater smoothies and cardamom apricot lassi, reflecting the flavors of Pietopia creator Tricia Martin’s most recent travels to India.
Kids Cook at the Market
This month there are two more fun opportunities to teach your kids about the seasonality of food. Classes include a market tour where they will meet local farmers and food artisans, and hands-on experience preparing ingredients purchased fresh at the market. Watch this fun video from a recent class, then sign up today for a chance to see your kids truly excited about new cooking skills and eating fresh, local food!
August Happenings
This month is packed with clever, tasty, and wild excursions for the kids, the whole family, or just for you. Click here to discover what’s happening around Portland’s food and farming community this month>>
