Bavarian Tasting & Farmers Market Opens
June 9, 2010
Greetings!
One of the things that excited me the most about opening a shop in Montavilla (besides that it’s a fabulous neighborhood!) is that I could walk to work from my house. Living close by has also allowed me to enjoy another great local walk, the short trek to the Sunday morning Farmer’s Market. I am happy and proud to say that Immortal Pie and Larder is a sponsor of this year’s Montavilla Farmer’s Market. I’m even more happy to say that the market opens for the season THIS Sunday, the 13th. Now you really don’t need to go out of the neighborhood to get everything you need! Stock up on berries and salad fixings then come on over for some beer, wine, olive oil, vinegar, or whatever else you need to finish a great Sunday dinner at home. Check out Montavilla Market’s webpage for more info. Also, this Friday night we are going to defy the rain and do a little beer dance for some sun with a Bavarian Beer Tasting. Read below for more details.

Bavarian Beer Tasting
Weeks of unending rain and darkness in the middle of Spring got you down? Ready to break out the flip flops and kiddie pool and sweat in the sun? Well, the weather man (and I know he’s been dead wrong before, but let’s think positive here) is saying that it’s going to hit 80 this weekend. All weekend. For me, that means it’s beer time. I can’t think of a more appropriate tasting to kick off the first warm weekend of the season than a Bavarian beer tasting.
Often times people think Bavaria is just an old name for Germany, or that they are interchangeable. They are not. Bavaria is the largest state in Germany, located in the Southeastern part of the country. The capital is Munich and it’s one of the oldest states in Europe. They are also the creators of the Reinheitsgebot, or German Purity Law, and they drink a lot of beer. Only the Czechs and the Irish drink more (and after the last two weeks I spent in Ireland I can tell you at least the last part is true). They also make a surprising array of beers, from light to dark, wheaty to malty to skunky. We’ll be tasting 5 beers this Friday. A filtered weissbier, a dark weissbier, a dark lager, a dopplebock and a crazy Bavarian style beer made by German immigrants in Brazil. Don’t miss it!
Unfortunately, the guy above will not be attending but if you come dressed like him I’ll give you a free pour!
