Over the past 10 years, eateries around the state have joined
together to support equality for all in our annual Bites for Rights
event. On Thursday, June 18th, establishments will be donating
15% of their proceeds to Basic Rights Oregon.

One of the reasons that Bites for Rights works is that so many restaurants are committed to achieving equality here in Oregon. Take Holly Hart, for example, the owner of Old Wives’ Tales in Portland. Holly has been supporting pro-equality work for over three decades now, and has participated in all 10 years of Bites for Rights. And her reasoning is quite simple:
“I’ve been involved in this work since the beginning of the modern gay and transgender rights movement in Oregon in 1971, and in that time, we’ve accomplished a lot and shown what we can accomplish. But why stop now? We have to keep going and we have to keep at it. That’s why I participate in Bites for Rights and support Basic Rights Oregon. Every year is another year to advance equality for gay and transgender Oregonians.” And Holly isn’t alone; she stands with over 65 other establishment owners who are helping make a fairer and more equal Oregon.
Your part is easy. Just go out and have fun. Eat breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner at pro-equality businesses, and these businesses donate 15% back to Basic Rights Oregon.
So make a day of it this year, and support local establishments that support equality for all. Visit as many places as you can, be sure to thank them for their participation before you leave, and don’t forget to order dessert!
